Supreme Court rules that certain gun crimes are not ‘crimes of violence’ under federal law
Washington (BKNN) – The Supreme Court ruled in favor of Justin Taylor, a Virginia man who is seeking to challenge one of his convictions for using a firearm during an attempted robbery. This decision will allow Taylor to seek a 10 year sentence reduction.
The 7-2 decision handed down on Tuesday by the court ruled that a conviction for attempted robbery under the federal Hobbs Act does not fit the definition of a “crime of violence,” and in effect does not trigger an enhanced sentence when a firearm is used.
The ruling will allow Taylor, and others convicted under the Hobbs Act challenge their convictions and sentences.
